The Dimestore Fishermen come to Chilliwack, British Columbia |
This trip was an event to say the least. It all began back in January of 2003 when I called Jim and Devon to see if they had ever done a show on Sturgeon before . Much to my surprise, they had not and thought it would be a great idea to do the first show of the 2003 season on sturgeon in Chilliwack ,BC, Canada. |
Over the next few months we bantered back and forth over the best time and came up with early may, to co-incide with the yearly eulachon run. Eulachon are a small herring like fish that come up the Fraser to spawn in spring and these are the main food source for sturgeon after the winter. |

Finally the day for the "Dimestore Fishermen" to arrive was upon us. There were to be two other guests along , these were Ben Fairbrother from the BC Lions football team and Chris David from Mountain Country Outfitters in Hinton, Alberta,Chris is also prostaff member for QUARROW rods. He brought along a couple of rods for us to try out on the big bad sturgeon. |

First day of fishing and we were at the river at a reasonable time, but not too early, as sturgeon can be caught any time of day, the river was up but holding steady&lots of chatter and bantering between the two boats, took a couple of hours to get into fish but only a few small ones . Kept moving around and were hooking fish steady all day.
The next day was slower until the afternoon and we found some "fresh eulachons" and got into a hole that was holding many fish. Within an hour we had hooked 15 fish ranging from 3 feet up to 5.5 feet. some double headers in there. By now the boys were really wound up and having some real fun, even though their arms could have fallen off.

The third day they arrived at the dock with some bad news , Brian the cameraman had fallen and broken his leg and just as I was getting up off the ground , they burst out laughing saying the look on my face as priceless.
I had been warned of pranks and jocularity, but that one caught me off guard. So away we go on the third day, headed back to the hot spot of the day before, to find it occupied. Not to worry, lots of water to fish in the Fraser river.travelled around hooking a few fish here and there, between 4 and 5 feet. We eventually headed back to the honey hole to find an opening in there.Where we proceded to land 25 fish in 4 hours with the biggest at 6 feet. Now the guys are tired out and have had a great trip Sturgeon fishing in Chilliwack BC. |

Special thanks to Dean Werk for helping out on the other boat to make this a memorable trip and a great show for "The Dimestore Fishermen".
Watch for this show to air across Canada and the US over the next year!
